Details

A shell and tube heat exchanger is a device that transfers heat from one fluid to another without mixing them together. It has two main parts: a large outer container called the shell, and a bundle of smaller tubes running through the inside of it. One fluid flows through the tubes.

Hot fluid enters through the inlet nozzle on one end of the shell. It flows around the outside of the tube bundle. At the same time, a cooler fluid enters from the other end and travels through the tubes.

These two fluids never touch each other. But heat travels through the tube walls from the hotter side to the cooler side. Baffles which are flat plates inside the shell force the shell-side fluid to flow back and forth across the tubes. This increases contact time and makes the heat exchanger far more efficient. A floating head heat exchanger has one fixed tube sheet and one end that can move freely inside the shell. This free end floating head allows the tube bundle to be completely pulled out for cleaning and inspection. It handles extreme temperature differences very well.
