Diablo 4's Horadric Cube has made late-game equipment planning much more deliberate. Its Transfigure Item recipe can add a powerful new effect to a Legendary, Unique, or Mythic Unique piece, but the price is steep: Volatile Primordial Dust and a serious risk of losing access to future crafting. If you are sorting through D4 items, do not treat every promising drop as an immediate project. The real goal is to identify which pieces deserve a careful, staged investment.
Why the first roll changes everything
A normal transfiguration can produce either Indestructible or Unmodifiable. The first result is harmless and still leaves the item open to further work. The second closes the door on Tempering, Enchanting, Masterworking, and another transfiguration. Sockets can still be adjusted, but the important crafting choices are finished. Only around four or five items in every hundred remain workable after a standard attempt, depending on the item type. That low survival rate should shape your whole plan.
Two sensible ways to handle your materials
With a single item you genuinely want to wear, take the cautious route. Make sockets first, apply Tempering, finish the Occultist roll, imprint the right Aspect, and then Masterwork the piece. Only after that should you risk another Cube attempt. If the next roll closes the item, at least it is already complete. Spare bases call for the opposite treatment. Test them while they are plain. Most will fail the workable-item check, so salvage them and move on. When one survives, spend your gold and materials on it.
Amulets need their own plan
Amulets are especially attractive because a Kullean Tuning Prism can add a bonus utility Aspect while keeping the item open for more crafting. Settle the prism result before ordinary upgrades, and use another prism if the added effect does not suit your build. Then handle sockets, Tempering, Enchanting, and Masterworking. A regular transfiguration should come last. Starting with that regular roll may close the amulet and remove your chance to use a prism at all.
Keep spare bases for early testing.
Protect one vital stat through Enchanting when possible.
Remember that Tempered and Greater Affixes are usually safer from replacement.
Do not use an Entropic Tuning Prism when you want another roll, because it always closes the item.
Protect the stat your build cannot lose
Before a normal transfiguration, consider Enchanting the affix that matters most and retaining its original value. The game marks it as enchanted, which generally protects it from replacement. Tempered and Greater Affixes also receive similar protection. This uses your one Enchanting slot, so choose carefully. A little patience here can turn a lucky drop into dependable diablo 4 gear rather than an expensive near miss.
